Cranioplasty with three-dimensional customised mould for polymethylmethacrylate implant: a series of 16 consecutive patients with cost-effectiveness consideration

Abstract Background Different methods of cranioplasty for the reconstruction bony skull defects exist. In absence autologous bone flap, a customised manufactured implant may be optimal choice, but this has several limitations regarding its technical standardisation and better cost-effectiveness. Methods This study presents series 16 consecutive patients who had undergone with three-dimensional (3D) template moulds polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) implants after 3D modelling on specific workstation. The virtual images were transformed into two-piece physical model using printer biomaterials. PMMA was produced intraoperatively custom mould. Cosmetic results analysed by comparing pre- postoperative computed tomography (CT) asking if patient satisfied result. Results average total time planning production mould 10 days. result, CT presented harmonious symmetry when scans. Cases infection, bleeding, or reoperation in not observed. Conclusion Cranioplasty high-technology can allow an aesthetic fast cost-effective manufacturing process possibly low complication rates.
